Are PLANTS The Bad Guys?! {When Your Nutrition Beliefs Get Rocked!}

I’ve consistently been a fan of what I like to call “The Human Being Diet”… a diet comprised of “God-grown foods”… animals, plants, naturally occurring fats & oils. Real food. Whole food. Simple.

In recent years, I’ve added to that the concept of Diet Variation, Fasting Variation, and cycling through various HEALTHY eating and fasting ‘styles’… like Keto, modified keto, ketobiotic, Primal, carnivore, paleo, sometimes higher in fat, sometimes higher in protein, sometimes more plant based… combined with cycles of intermittent fasting (time-restricted eating), extended fasting/therapeutic fasting, OMAD (one meal a day), alternate day fasting, etc. etc.

I believe we should eat the least toxic food possible, raised/grown in a way that’s closest to the way God (nature) intended… meddled with by humans as little as possible.

I believe we should not eat so often.

I believe there are times to eat, and even longer times NOT to eat.

Oh, and I believe we need to strategically detoxify at the level our CELLS and work to repair & regenerate our cells.

Some things are certain: “Bad” fats are nutritionally evil. Refined carbs and sugar, too. Cellular toxicity and repair needs to be addressed, time and time again… since toxic exposure/ingestion is not a one time thing.

So, I’ve been skipping along, eating a diet lower in crap carbs, higher in healthy fats, low in toxic fats, moderate amounts of protein… playing around with lots of fasting variety, mostly sticking with delayed onset eating as the norm, incorporating HIIT/burst workouts, resistance training, stress-reducing cardio/aerobic exercise, getting outside a LOT… and throwing in cellular detoxification and repair protocols as my own form of meaningful health insurance.

Oh, and clean coffee. And some wine. Because. Just because.

Thought I was doin’ all right, to be honest. Thinking, “If I could just get some sleeeeeeeeep, my health life would be spot-on!!” 😉

Then along came a new wave of carnivore enthusiasts… and their scientific evidence!

I had just gotten on board with cycling in some weeks/maybe even months of full-on carnivore eating & cooking-for-the-family style… thinking I’d just go back to modified ketone or primal on the flip side.

THEN, I started hearing that plants are not only “unnecessary” for our health, but they INTERFERE with our health… they have toxic properties… and they can actually be detrimental to our health. {Go ahead and gasp. I did.}

My entire life is a lie.

My mind still hurts from being blown so badly!!

I’ve listened to some highly educated and clinically experienced doctors and researchers explain that, like pharmaceutical drugs, plants can have *some* benefits… but those come with a definite cost in the form of negative side effects.

Plants. Beautiful green plants… that I’ve eaten daily for years and served my children daily for years.

So now, my carnivorous approach that started out as “just a few weeks” has turned into an endeavor with no set end date!

There’s a BIG difference between cycling through various ‘healthy’ eating styles for spurts of time and NOT returning to eating plants!!!

ughhhhhhh.

There’s a chance this may all be a dream and I’ll still be spending my senior years happily gnawing on dark leafy greens in the sunshine somewhere.

I’m not 100% on board with not eating any plants again… at least not yet. But I am curious. I’m still early in my personal research and experimentation. Results will speak volumes to me. I’m more than open to learning so much more on this.

I’ve started wondering, could eating so many plants for so many years be contributing to:

-accelerated signs of aging?

-poor quality sleep? (although the freight-train-of-a-human that I share a bed with is likely the most obvious reason for this!)

-chronic pain and injuries that aren’t healing as well as they ‘should’?

-chronic skin issues with our children?

-some mild but chronic gut issues with one of our kiddos?

-some chronic immune challenges with the other kiddo?

Who knows?!

I am definitely willing to experiment… even with our children’s diets (they’re teenagers… which basically means adult-like, when it comes to their health). Not sure about returning to plants after that or not… or to what extent.

At this point, I can’t imagine my life without my loaded salads, broccoli, Brussels-sprouts, and asparagus… staples in our family! Maybe they just won’t be a daily thing…?

(All it took was for that one doc to liken plants to pharmaceuticals, and he had me thinking!! You may be familiar with my opinion of pharmaceutical drugs!)

Time will tell! I’ll report in and let you know what we notice along the way.
